We love Bicycle Adventures trips. My husband rides for the challenge and the scenery; I ride at a more leisurely pace to experience the spectacular sights...and we both have the kind of vacation we enjoy. We also appreciate the hiking options.

Meet in Calgary. Ride the Banff region, including Lake Minnewanka, ‘Water of the Spirits.’

Meet us in Calgary. We'll whisk you away into the heart of the Canadian Rockies, where views become more and more rugged and glorious. Lunch at Cascade Pond, whose sapphire waters are framed by evergreens and snowy peaks. Ride to one of the treasures of the Canadian Rockies: Lake Minnewanka, meaning ‘Water of the Spirits’ in the Stoney Indian language. Surrounded by the lofty peaks of Mount Inglismaldie, Mount Girouard and Mount Peechee, this 17-mile lake is the longest in the Canadian Rockies parks. Circle the lake, then ride into Banff, ‘Grand masterpiece of the West,’ a once-upon-a-time railroad town which has attracted luminaries from the likes of Bobby Kennedy to Burt Reynolds.

Bike to Johnston Canyon. Hike the canyon, with its effervescent waterfalls and limestone formations called the Ink Pots.

Ride west of Banff along peaceful Bow Valley Parkway, one of the most scenic bicycle rides in what is already an incredibly scenic area. Watch for elk, moose and other big-game wildlife among meadows and forests of aspen and lodgepole pine. Hike to Johnston Canyon, a deep glacier-carved limestone bowl filled with plunging waterfalls and curving rock wells.

Ride to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lake Louise. Hike from Lake Louise to a teahouse high on the Plain of Six Glaciers.

Today, take a short spin from Moraine Lake Lodge to explore Lake Louise. Hike the wooded shores of the lake, then up to one of the teahouses nestled into the forested hillside. Continue onward if you like, past the treeline to a stunning 360-degree view: the majestic Plain of Six Glaciers soaring above, with the turquoise waters of Lake Louise shining below. Indulge in a massage at the spa at Chateau Lake Louise, or explore the shops at Lake Louise village. Need to ride? That's an option too.

Ride the majestic Icefields Parkway, from Lake Louise to Saskatchewan Crossing.

Today, ride the Icefields Parkway, which National Geographic calls “a great swath of sensational country.” Part of the Canadian Rockies UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Parkway rolls along through densely forested hillsides and river-strewn valleys crested by sparkling glaciers and snowfields. Admire the one-hundred-plus glaciers visible from this famous parkway paralleling the Continental Divide. Stop to see the Weeping Wall's 330-foot plunge down Cirrus Mountain. Bicycle past Crowfoot Glacier and Bow Lake, which English explorer Jimmy Simpson called ‘the most beautiful thing I've seen in Canada.’ Be amazed at the unusual turquoise color of all the lakes here: it's caused by the prevalence of suspended glacial ‘rock flour.' The color makes for stunning photos.

Explore the Columbia Icefields. Ride to Sunwapta Falls.

Bicycle the Columbia Icefields today - a spectacular panorama of ice-blanketed hillsides edged with summer wildflowers. Marvel at the Columbia Icefield, which covers an area of 200-plus miles and is in places nearly 1,000 feet deep. Bike past eight major glaciers including the Athabasca, Dome, and Stutfield Glaciers, all receding but still magnificently powerful. Explore the Columbia Icefields’ fascinating visitors’ center. Finally, pedal onward to our lodging at Sunwapta Falls Resort. Enjoy a short hike to see Sunwapta’s roaring waterfalls on their journey from the vast Athabasca Glacier.

Ride to Jasper township before heading back to Calgary.

Enjoy a final, easy bike ride into the quaint turn-of-the-century railroad town and fur trading post of Jasper, Alberta, Canada. Banff’s northern cousin, Jasper is tucked along the banks of the Athabasca River and surrounded by four mountain ranges, making it a picturesque, fitting place to end our explorations. Celebrate the week with a gourmet picnic, then head back to Calgary International Airport for your trip home.
