Ride to the Whitewater Preserve through the San Gorgonio Pass.

Start the ride in the valley then pedal up to the Whitewater Preserve, nestled between the San Bernardino and San Jacinto Mountains. Cross the San Gorgonio Pass Wind Farm, one of the oldest and largest wind farms in the United states. After lunch return the way you came, then maybe explore a bit of Coachella Valley or tackle a ride up Mt. San Jacinto (the toughest ride in the valley!). Or relax and lounge by the pool.

Day 1: Whitewater, 36.5 mi. +1816 ft / -1816 ft (option for big climb, too)

Pedal to the Salton Sea, a lake with depths rivaling Death Valley's lowest point, salinity greater than the Pacific Ocean, and quirky boom-and-bust towns.

Pedal beside the Salton Sea, once part of a vast inland sea. Today it's the largest lake in California. Head up to Salvation Mountain and check out a modern masterpiece of desert folk art made of concrete and adobe adorned with colorful paint and religious messages – recognized by the US Senate as a national treasure.

Day 2: Salton Sea, 37.8 mi. +458 ft / -216 ft

Ride Palm Springs and visit a palm canyon.

Home to the rich and famous of the Rat Pack era, the Palm Springs of today boasts the best urban life has to offer. The Rat Pack may have moved on, but the city’s style hasn't. Palm Springs is as cool as it gets in the middle of a desert. Pedal around the city and take a short hike to a palm oasis. Check out Ferraris and retro-style architecture. Pamper your tastebuds at sweet cafés. Window shop. Dinner is on your own today.

Day 3: Palm Springs, 23.6 mi. +802 ft / -804 ft / -525 ft (plus 2.8 mile hike)

Joshua Tree National Park: Ride past its namesake trees. Count cactus varieties and maybe spot a jackrabbit or desert bighorn sheep.

Marvel at the twisted, spiky trees straight out of a Dr. Seuss illustration at the junction of three of California’s ecosystems: the Colorado Desert, the Mojave Desert, and the Little San Bernardino Mountains. Check out the geologic formations that make this a favored destination for rock-climbers and the hundreds of plant and animal species that make them their home.

Day 4: Joshua Tree west, 34.1 mi. +2110 ft / -2862 ft

Return to Joshua Tree National Park for a magnificent finale!

Enjoy a mostly downhill ride through the south end of the park today. Take a short walk through one of the most prolific cholla (cactus) gardens in the southwest and keep an eye out for desert tortoise and wildflowers below Cottonwood Springs. Have a celebratory lunch before we return you (albeit reluctantly) back to the “real world”.

Day 5: Joshua Tree south, 40.4 mi. +1,751 ft / -4,634 ft
