DAY 1

Meet in Boise. Shuttle to Baker City, then ride peaceful farm roads along part of Oregon's Grande Tour Scenic Bikeway.

Note: Oregon's 'Scenic Bikeways' lead through Oregon's best scenic, historic, natural and cultural areas.Their wide lanes, cyclist-friendly businesses and special amenities represent an enormous investment in bicycle tourism.Scenic Bikeways make for a welcoming experience - as you'll see on this tour.

Meet us in Boise. Hop in the van for a shuttle to Baker City. Bicycle past rural farms and rolling hills along part of the Grande Tour Scenic Bikeway. Ride to Medical Springs, a near ghost town where a natural hot spring at one time hosted a steam bath used by the Native American population, then a resort (built by Abraham Lincoln's cousin) featuring an Olympic-sized pool fed by the hot springs. Continue riding into rolling hill country as the scenery changes from farm land to ponderosa pine forest. Enjoy a descent through narrow canyons and along beautiful Catherine Creek. Tonight, stay at the Historic Union Hotel.

DAY 2

Ride beside the Wallowa River into Eagle Cap Wilderness, at the feet of the Wallowa Mountains.

Van to the quiet side of the hills this morning. Ride beside the Wallowa River as it curves beside the northern mountains of Oregon's Columbia Plateau. Closer to todayís destination, the roads open out into farmland with tiny glimpses of Eagle Cap Peak. Come around a corner, and - ta-daa! You're suddenly in full glorious view of Wallowa Lake and the Eagle Cap Wilderness, with Chief Joseph Mountain towering over you along with its neighbors: 30 peaks topping out over 8,000 feet. Stop for a photo or maybe a dozen. Ride the lake shore to tonight's lodging at Wallowa Lake Lodge. Watch for deer and eagles. Spend the next two nights enjoying spectacular views of the Wallowa Mountains and the tall pines.

DAY 3

Today: time to explore and enjoy Joseph. Zoom up the Wallowa Lake Tramway; try tandem paragliding; hike, swim or rent a canoe. Go on a brewpub tour. Plenty of great choices!

Take today off. (This place is too good to miss.) Ride the Wallowa Lake Tramway - possibly the easiest way to climb 3,700 feet! Swim, hike, try tandem paragliding or rent a canoe or paddleboard. Head over to the art-rich town of Joseph to shop, visit museums or the chocolate factory. Check out one of the several breweries. Or spend the day in peace by the lodge watching the deer on the lawn. Not enough biking yet? There are two very good options for rides a road ride to Imnaha with a 30 mile descent into a deep canyon giving you a sneak peak of forthcoming Hellís Canyon...followed by a 30 mile climb.

DAY 4

Downhill to tiny Imnaha for lunch at a hidden treasure of a tavern.

Bicycle 30 miles of smooth bends and curves, descending into the tiny town of Imnaha. This morning's ride is all downhill. Enjoy lunch at a beautiful local tavern, then either hop in the van for a boost back up to Wallowa Lake - or pedal back to the top. If you'd rather stay put in Joseph than ride, there's still plenty to keep you entertained for another day.

DAY 5

Ride into Hells Canyon Wilderness on the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway. Time for a look at North America's deepest river gorge.

Ride from Joseph into the Hells Canyon Wilderness today. Climb the high Wallowa Mountain Loop / Hells Canyon Scenic Byway to the Hells Canyon Overlook. Have a look at the deepest river gorge in North America. (More incredible photos!) Ride down to the river at the bottom, then it's a short climb to Halfway. Stay tonight at Pine Valley Lodge.

DAY 6

Ride from Pine Valley to the Powder River and a visit to the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. After a look back, head to Boise for your return journey home.

Pedal up and out of Pine Valley, then cruise a long descent to a ride beside the Powder River. Then it's up again to open plains filled with sagebrush and beautiful vistas. Stop to explore the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center and learn about the journey early settlers endured as they migrated through the Wild West. You can actually see the original ruts in the ground as the wagon wheels forged through the topsoil. Gaze at the distant mountain ranges of the Elkhorns and back at the Wallowas you have just conquered. After lunch and a final farewell, load up for the shuttle back to Boise.
