Meet in Seattle, Washington. Ferry to quiet, rustic Guemes Island (pop. 563) and ride the island’s perimeter. Sail aboard a Washington State Ferry to charming Lopez Island.
Meet us on Monday morning in Seattle for a complimentary van shuttle to Anacortes, at the edge of Puget Sound. Catch an island-hopper ferry for the 10-minute ride to Guemes Island - a small, quiet islet. Its one commercial establishment, Anderson's General Store, has big bragging rights: it lays claim to the world’s best ice cream cones. Pedal the wooded, rocky shores of this peaceful island, cast your own vote on the ice cream, then take the afternoon ferry to Lopez Island for the night.
Ride to Spencer Spit State Park's lagoon and Shark Reef Sanctuary, with its harbor seals and inimitable views of the Olympic Mountains. Hop aboard the ferry to San Juan Island.
Ride the perimeter of Lopez Island. With its miles of winding low-traffic roads and bike-friendly residents who wave as you pedal by, Lopez is considered 'the bicyclist’s island.' Watch for bald eagles at Spencer Spit. Laugh at the comical harbor seals basking on the sun-warmed rocks at Shark Reef. Enjoy the views of a lighthouse on San Juan Island just a mile away across the channel. (On a clear day you'll spy the outline of the city of Victoria on Canada's Vancouver Island and a panorama of glacier-swathed peaks in Olympic National Park across the Straits of Juan de Fuca.) Hop aboard the afternoon ferry to San Juan Island for a two-night stay at the beautifully-restored Tucker House Inn, an 1898 historic inn that is just steps from Friday Harbor's shops and restaurants. Conde Nast Traveler recently named Friday Harbor one of the Most Beautiful Towns in America. Spend some time exploring!
Ride San Juan Island: Tall firs and glittering waters; irresistibly cute alpaca; the scent of fresh lavender; resident Orca whales.
Bicycle San Juan Island today, getting a full complement of meadows, deep forest and coastline. Visit Krystal Acres Alpaca Farm and pedal to Lime Kiln State Park, the only state park in the country devoted to observing orca (killer) whales. There are three resident Orca pods in the islands. If they aren't feeding here, watch for these tuxedoed beauties at Cattle Point, where you'll head next. Soothe your senses at Pelindaba's lavender farm. Then head back to Friday Harbor for a second night at Tucker House.
Kayak peaceful Roche Harbor this morning (instruction and all equipment included); ride a bit more of San Juan Island, then head back to Seattle.
Kayak placid, historic Roche Harbor this morning. Its calm waters are ideal for first-time kayakers, and a local outfitter supplies plenty of instruction - along with two-person kayaks, experienced guides and all necessary equipment. Take the dry-land instruction, then paddle the harbor's rocky shoreline. Watch for seals and eagles! Up for an early-morning spin? Ride the 9 miles from Friday Harbor to historic Roche Harbor for the kayak excursion. Rather hop in the van? No problem, we're heading there. After a terrific lunch at Westcott Bay Nature Reserve's sculpture garden, we'll take you back to Seattle.
As an optional extra, a person traveling solo on any inn-to-inn trip may reserve a room for his or her exclusive use. This will guarantee you a private room and private bath every night. Unlike other tour companies, if you're willing to share a room, there is no extra charge for coming solo, no matter when you sign up for the tour - even if you wind up with a private room by default.
