Meet in Seattle, Washington. Head straight to Lopez Island for a ride to picturesque Fisherman Bay for lunch, then on to Shark Reef Sanctuary with its harbor seals and inimitable views of the Olympic Mountains.
Meet us on Monday morning in Seattle for a complimentary van shuttle to Anacortes, at the edge of Puget Sound. Catch the ferry through the waters of Rosario Strait to Lopez Island. With its miles of winding low-traffic roads and bike-friendly residents who wave as you pedal by, Lopez is considered 'the bicyclist’s island.' Ride through Lopez Village to Fisherman Bay Preserve for a picnic lunch. Laugh at the comical harbor seals basking on the sun-warmed rocks at Shark Reef. Enjoy the views of a lighthouse on San Juan Island just a mile away across the channel. (On a clear day you'll spy the outline of the city of Victoria on Canada's Vancouver Island and a panorama of glacier-swathed peaks in Olympic National Park across the Straits of Juan de Fuca.) Stay at The Edenwild Boutique Inn tonight.
Ride to Spencer Spit State Park's lagoon, Agate Beach and Watmough Bay - then vote on which is your favorite. Hop aboard the ferry to San Juan Island.
Continue along the perimeter of Lopez Island. Watch for bald eagles at Spencer Spit. Pedal rolling hills through farm country to Agate Beach. Hike out to Iceberg Point with wildflowers, views of the Olympic Mountains and possibly an orca (killer) whale sighting along the way. After lunch, continue on to charming Watmough Bay for a few more photo ops. Hop aboard the afternoon ferry to San Juan Island for a two-night stay at the beautifully-restored Tucker House Inn, an 1898 historic inn that is just steps from Friday Harbor's shops and restaurants. Conde Nast Traveler recently named Friday Harbor one of the Most Beautiful Towns in America. Spend some time exploring!
Ride San Juan Island: glittering waters; irresistibly cute alpaca; the scents of fir trees and fresh lavender; resident Orca whales.
Bicycle San Juan Island today, getting a full complement of meadows, deep forest and coastline. Visit Krystal Acres Alpaca Farm and pedal to Lime Kiln State Park, the only state park in the country devoted to observing orca whales. There are three resident Orca pods in the islands. If they aren't feeding here, watch for these tuxedoed beauties at Cattle Point, where you'll head next. Soothe your senses at Pelindaba's lavender farm. Then head back to Friday Harbor. Explore as long as you like, then take your pick of the area restaurants for dinner.
Kayak peaceful Roche Harbor this morning (instruction and all equipment included); ride a bit more of San Juan Island, then head back to Seattle.
Kayak placid, historic Roche Harbor this morning. Its calm waters are ideal for first-time kayakers, and a local outfitter supplies plenty of instruction - along with two-person kayaks, experienced guides and all necessary equipment. Take the dry-land instruction, then paddle the harbor's rocky shoreline. Watch for seals and eagles! Up for an early-morning spin? Ride the 9 miles from Friday Harbor to historic Roche Harbor for the kayak excursion. Rather hop in the van? No problem, we're heading there. After a terrific lunch at Westcott Bay Nature Reserve's sculpture garden, we'll take you back to Seattle.
As an optional extra, a person traveling solo on any inn-to-inn trip may reserve a room for his or her exclusive use. This will guarantee you a private room and private bath every night. Unlike other tour companies, if you're willing to share a room, there is no extra charge for coming solo, no matter when you sign up for the tour - even if you wind up with a private room by default.
