Wide open spaces, sloping mountain passes, winding roads and wild rivers: this is Idaho's ultimate multi-sport vacation. Ride, golf, hike, river raft, shop Sun Valley - and soak up some of the Wild West's most stunning scenery. From rustic cabins and outdoor BBQ to Sun Valley chic, you'll experience the best Southern Idaho can dish up. Its bold, broad expanses and alpine atmosphere are unmatched. On your bike, expect to be challenged by a couple of serious climbs, then rewarded with spectacular vistas - and plenty of downtime to rest, relax and explore.
Start in Boise. Cruise the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway, then bike beside the Payette River, a tributary of the Snake.
Idaho City - a historic mining town where you can still pan for gold - is the perfect start point for today's ride on the Ponderosa Pine Scenic byway. We'll follow Mores Creek, then Lamar Creek and finally Beaver Creek, all the while enjoying glimpses of the Sawtooths on the horizon. Then we'll head into Lowman, on the Payette River, to stay at Idaho's Sourdough Lodge – the only place in town!
Up and over: meet the foothills of the Sawtooth Range.
Today's ride is a bit more challenging. Head up and over Banner Summit, a long but gradual mountain pass. To one side: the Sawtooth Wilderness, with 217,000 pristine acres of rugged forests and pristine lakes. To the other: the Salmon-Challis National Forest, gateway to the 2.3-million-acre Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, with more contiguous acres of road-free wild lands than anywhere in the lower 48. From the summit - one of Idaho’s highest at 7,056 feet - you'll descend into the town of Stanley, surrounded by the gorgeous Sawtooth Mountain Range.
Raft. Hike. Kayak. Swim. Float the river. Ride your bike. Or just relax.
Today is loaded with options: river rafting on the famous Salmon River, day hiking, kayaking, swimming at Redfish Lake, floating the Salmon River and/or taking a short ride to tour the Sawtooth Fish Hatchery - all are on the agenda. Take your pick.
Bicycle Galena Pass to world-famous Sun Valley.
Spend today riding through pastoral agricultural lands, then up to Galena Pass along the Sawtooth Scenic Byway, showcase of the Sawtooth Mountains. Watch for pronghorn antelope, deer and elk! You'll spend the next two nights at luxurious Sun Valley Inn, with plenty of time to explore the star-studded town.
Explore Sun Valley.
Experience all that Sun Valley has to offer: go for a hike, head onto the dirt for a mountain bike ride; golf, play tennis, shop...or just relax at the spa.
Bicycle from Sun Valley to the Powerhouse Pub & Bike Shop. Magic Reservoir for those who haven't over-indulged. And maybe for those who have.
Ride just 15 miles South to Hailey, Idaho for a stop at the famous Powerhouse Pub and Bike Shop, where you can enjoy a burger (grass-fed beef, anyone?) and your choice of 130 beers while ogling the coolest new bikes and gear. If you haven't over-indulged, ride 30 more miles after lunch to Magic Reservoir for a final toast. Then we'll hop into the van back to Boise to finish the trip.
