Recharge in charming lodges, including a couple with hot springs on site as you experience genuine Montana country along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountain Range.
Meet in Great Falls. Pedal along the quiet and scenic historic Route 1 to a delicious lunch, then count how many bird species you spot on a river cruise this afternoon. Stay in Boulder tonight and take a dip in the first hot springs of the trip.
Meet in Great Falls, then shuttle a short distance to Cascade for a bike fitting. Take a scenic ride on historic Route 1 as it shadows the twists and turns of the Missouri River, slicing through deep cuts into the igneous rock formations. Hop onto a boat and explore the Gates of the Mountains. After docking, shuttle to tonight's lodging at Boulder Hot Springs Resort. Did we mention the hot springs? Don't forget your swimsuit.
Ride from Boulder to Three Forks - Miles and Miles of Big Sky
Bicycle south today through farmland, surrounded by that big Montana Sky all the way. If you like, stop for ice cream or fudge as you continue along the Missouri River to Three Forks, then visit the side-by-side confluences of the Jefferson and Madison Rivers, then the Gallatin and Missouri Rivers. Tonight: stay at the Sacagawea Hotel.
Three Forks to Dillon.
Follow the Jefferson River today, along a mostly flat route with Beaverhead Rock on the horizon. Steeped in history, Dillon, Montana will tempt you with sightseeing, and you'll have time to explore with lunch on your own today. Up for a challenge? Ride up Badger Pass, and be rewarded with a rolling ribbon of a descent into Grasshopper Valley. The Pioneer Scenic Mountain Byway will call you home to the Montana High Country Guest Lodge, our lodging for the next two nights.
Choose your own adventure today: A sight-seeing and hiking excursion to Lemhi Pass, where Lewis & Clark forged their passage of the Continental Divide. Or stay in scenic Grasshopper Valley where you can pedal more of that scenic byway, or enjoy a hike. This evening, check out the local hot springs.
Rest and recharge as much or as little as you'd like today. Enjoy the views and hikes from our lodging, bicycle more of the Pioneer Mountain Scenic Byway, or form a mini-Lewis & Clark excursion to Lemhi Pass where you can first spy the west side of the Continental Divide just as they did some 200 years ago. Pose for photos at one of the Missouri River's headwaters before heading back to check out the hot springs near our lodging.
Ride through the scenic Big Hole Valley and cross the Continental Divide at Chief Joseph Pass. Snap some photos at the Montana-Idaho border, then coast down to tonight's lodging and settle for a soak at their hot springs.
Drop down into the valley, where the horizon broadens. Pedal through the small towns of Jackson and Wisdom, and pause for several photos with the Wisdom street signs. Bike through gorgeous prairie lands lined with uncountable peaks. Climb to Chief Joseph Pass (7,251' elevation) for a short, fast descent into Lost Creek Hot Springs Resort. Tonight: thank goodness, another hot spring resort! Time to soak, then sleep.
A long, gradual downhill today? You've earned it! Pedal from Lost Trail to Hamilton for lunch at a celebrated local brewpub, then on to Missoula.
Continue descending from the pass and follow the Bitterroot River today, pedaling through rural roads and spending a little time on some of the best gravel riding the U.S. has to offer. Enjoy lunch at Bitter Root Brewing before continuing north on miles and miles of protected bike path. Finish off your adventure in the bike-friendly college town of Missoula.
