Meet in Kona. Bike Waimea’s cowboy country and Waipio Valley, where Hawaiian kings once lived. Explore the Akaka Falls gorge.
Meet us at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott on the Kohala Coast, just north of Kona (public shuttle is available from the Kona Airport). Head for Waimea, in the heart of Hawaii’s cowboy country. Beneath the statue of a paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) we'll make sure your bike fits you perfectly. Head off, bicycling past ranchland and rolling countryside to a viewpoint overlooking the thousand-foot cliffs of lush Waipio Valley. Hawaii’s royalty lived here for hundreds of years; some rest here in hidden burial caves. Hike through the jungle to spectacular Akaka Falls, where legend has it that if you strike a certain rock with the branch of a lehua tree, rain will fall. Slurp up a fresh tropical-fruit smoothie, then it's off to the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, where oceanfront rooms overlook Hilo Bay. Enjoy the ocean-side pool and hot tub!
Pedal a blissful coastal section of the island that winds through ancient banyan trees and eucalyptus groves. Swim in a thermal hot spring at the ocean’s edge.
Bicycle a blissful stretch through a portion of this island the locals love, where the ocean plays peek-a-boo through immense banyans and forests of fragrant eucalyptus. Explore recent lava flows and spend time playing in bathwater-warm thermal pools overlooking the ocean. Spend tonight and tomorrow night at a lodge in Volcanoes National Park, with plenty of time at the visitor's center.
Trek into the Thurston Lava Tube. Explore the crater of Kilauea volcano.
Explore the home of Hawaii’s volcano goddess Pele today. Hike into the fern-filled grotto of the Thurston Lava Tube, where once a river of steaming lava surged. It's now a tranquil cave with ‘lava-cicles’ (the volcanic version of stalactites) 'soda straws' and other lava formations to discover. Take an eerie hike down into the volcano's Kilauea Iki crater and across its surface, where steam vents and the hardened-lava moonscape provide a home for Hawaii’s oddest bird, the protected Nene (Hawaiian Goose), which thrives in these seemingly barren lava plains.
Pedal down the volcano to black-sand Punalu'u Beach, playground for green sea turtles. Taste coffee ‘cherries’ on a tour of one of Kona’s plantations.
Cruise a glorious downhill from Kilauea Crater to Punalu'u, a black sand beach near the southern tip of the island. Punalu'u is famous for its green sea turtle community. Watch these ancient creatures at rest on the warm sand or exploring the tidepools, searching for things to nibble. Stop for a tour at Greenwell Coffee Farm (founded in 1850) on the way to Kona Town and your oceanfront lodging at the Sheraton Kona at Keauhou Bay.
Cruise on a 58-foot catamaran to watch for whales. Snorkel with schools of tropical fish in a hidden bay.
Board a 58-foot catamaran this last morning; set sail from your hotel to a hidden bay where coral formations hide thousands of brilliantly-hued fish and green sea turtles. Jump into the water to snorkel from the boat, then finish off with a gourmet on-board lunch. Watch for the humpback whales that frequent the Hawaiian Islands on the way back. Equipment, instruction, food, and drinks - everything's included. Stay tonight at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott, an upscale hotel on the Kohala Coast. Two tennis courts, a huge swimming pool with water slide, and a full service spa are also on-site; two championship golf courses, shopping and restaurants are just next door. If you're here for the New Year's trip, this is the night we'll ring it in, Hawaiian style!
Hike through the jungle to Pololu Valley. Bike to Hapuna.
This last morning, hit the trail to the black sands of Pololu, where centuries ago a human chain fourteen miles long passed rocks hand-over-hand up the hillside to build a heiau, a Hawaiian temple to the ancient gods. Finish off the week with an award celebration back at the Waikoloa Beach Resort.
Not ready to leave yet? Choose to spend additional time in Waikoloa. If you really need to head back to reality, take advantage of our complimentary van ride to the Kona airport this afternoon.
As an optional extra, a person traveling solo on any inn-to-inn trip may reserve a room for his or her exclusive use. This will guarantee you a private room and private bath every night. Unlike other tour companies, if you're willing to share a room, there is no extra charge for coming solo, no matter when you sign up for the tour - even if you wind up with a private room by default.
