Olympic Discovery Trail - NEW!

The Olympic Discovery Trail near Port Townsend, as seen on Bicycle Adventures' Olympic Discovery Trail bike tour Dungeness Bay, as seen on Bicycle Adventures' Olympic Discovery Trail bike tour The Olympic Discovery Trail near Railroad Bridge Park, as seen on Bicycle Adventures' Olympic Discovery Trail bike tour Riders on the Olympic Discovery Trail, as seen on Bicycle Adventures' Olympic Discovery Trail bike tour Ruffed Grouse, as seen on Bicycle Adventures' Olympic Discovery Trail bike tour Trail to Sol Duc Falls and Deer Lake, as seen on Bicycle Adventures' Olympic Discovery Trail bike tour Lake Crescent Lodge, as seen on Bicycle Adventures' Olympic Discovery Trail bike tour Sol Duc Falls, as seen on Bicycle Adventures' Olympic Discovery Trail bike tour

Decades in the making, the Olympic Discovery Trail follows an old rail line on the Olympic Peninsula. Bicycle the coastal plain with the snowcapped Olympic Mountain Range to one side and the Straits of Juan de Fuca on the other. Enjoy stellar views from waterfront inns each night. Bike, hike and explore the peninsula from Victorian-style Port Townsend to peaceful Dungeness Bay. Ride the no-cars-allowed side of gorgeous Lake Crescent. Soak in Sol Duc's hot springs - or hike from there to rainforest waterfalls and alpine lakes. Hike and explore the tidepools on the wild, wind-whipped Pacific Coast. Finish with a morning at Hurricane Ridge, overlooking both the Olympic Mountains and the Straits of Juan de Fuca.

DAY 1

Meet in Seattle. Hop aboard the ferry to Whidbey Island. Ride Fort Casey, then board another ferry to Port Townsend to begin riding the Olympic Discovery Trail.

Meet in Seattle. Shuttle north to board the 20-minute ferry to Whidbey Island. Stop for a bike fitting at Fort Casey, a turn-of-the-century army base defending Puget Sound. Take a spin around the base. Board a second ferry for the 35-minute cruise to the charming Victorian seaport of Port Townsend, where you'll begin riding the Olympic Discovery Trail. Take your time: today's ride from Port Townsend to Dungeness Bay has plenty of twists and turns. Route: 40 miles

DAY 2

Ride from Dungeness Bay along the Port Angeles waterfront, then into Olympic National Park.

You're in for a scenic treat today with a few hills tossed in for fun. From Dungeness Bay, pedal through peaceful countryside to the bustling Port Angeles waterfront. Time to ride off into the Olympic Peninsula wilderness with its towering Douglas fir and cedars. A challenging stretch from Joyce to the start of the Spruce Trail segment may tempt you to hop into the van for a boost. Skip this if you like, or bicycle the whole thing. Enjoy a picnic lunch at Lake Crescent, a sapphire-blue alpine gem tucked into the mountains of Olympic National Park. Continue riding the north shore of the lake to Fairholme General Store. Hop into the van for a quick shuttle up the highway to Lake Crescent Lodge, where you'll stay the next two nights. Route: 40 miles

DAY 3

Enjoy Lake Crescent: paddle a kayak, canoe or SUP. Hike to Marymere Falls, or up Storm King for an incredible view of the Olympics. Or head to Sol Duc Hot Springs for a soak or a rainforest hike (or both!)

Choose your own adventure today: Take an easy hike to 90-foot Marymere Falls, or a challenging one up Storm King for views all the way out to the Straits of Juan de Fuca. Or head to Sol Duc Hot Springs for a soak and/or a hike through the old-growth rainforest to Sol Duc Falls. Paddle Lake Crescent in one of the lodge's kayaks, canoes or SUPs. Or simply stay put at the lodge, soaking up the glorious mountain scenery. Lunch and dinner are on your own today (options at both the lodge and at the hot springs). Take your time and enjoy.

DAY 4

Ride the rainforest. After lunch at Lake Pleasant, bike or hop in the van to head to Quileute Oceanside Resort.

Ride through miles of rainforest this morning from Fairholme to Lake Pleasant. Towering Douglas fir, western red cedar and occasional bright stands of vine maple battle for terrain with sword fern and omnipresent blackberry vines. Lunch on the shores of tiny Lake Crescent, a popular local fishing spot. From here, choose to ride or hop in the van for the transfer out to Lapush and Quileute Oceanside Resort on the wild shoreline of the Pacific Ocean. You'll be here two nights, enjoying phenomenal ocean views from your room. Route: 43 miles

DAY 5

Another day to explore! Hike to Second Beach or Hole in the Wall. Build a driftwood fort, walk the beach or just enjoy the incredible view from your room.

Another day to explore! Tide permitting, hike from Rialto Beach to Hole in the Wall to explore the secrets of the local tidepools: sea anemone and sea star, tiny fish and hermit crabs all make their home here in ever-changing seaweed-jungle pools. If the tides don't allow for Hole in the Wall, hike through deep old-growth rainforest to Second Beach, one of the most incredibly gorgeous spots on the Olympic Peninsula. Sea stacks - tall rock formations separated from the main landmass - rise like specters from swaths of sandy beach. Bald eagles command the sky; seals and sea otter can occasionally be spotted on the sands. Or just relax and stay put at Quileute Oceanside Resort to watch the wind-tossed surf.

DAY 6

Head to Hurricane Ridge. Bike up - or ride up in the van and take time to hike at the summit with its incredible views of the Olympics and the Straits of Juan de Fuca. Then it's back to Seattle via Bainbridge Island.

Head to Hurricane Ridge this morning. If you're up for a challenge, ride from the base - a 19-mile doozie of a climb with 4,788 feet of elevation gain, topping out with a panoramic view of the Olympic Mountains and the Straits of Juan de Fuca - and even Victoria, B.C. on a bluebird day. But there's great hiking at the top too! You may wish to ride up in the van and hike around a bit at the summit, where you'll likely spot black tail deer, overly friendly camp robbers (gray jays), maybe a whistling Olympic marmot if you're lucky. After lunch here, hop in the van for the shuttle back to Seattle via Bainbridge Island. Route, should you choose to ride up: 25 miles
