Italy’s Puglia and Basilicata Bike Tour
Beautifully set on the Adriatic Coast between the heel and spur of Italy’s boot, Puglia blends ancient Greek and Italian cultures amid vineyards, olive groves, and whitewashed villages. Our cycling journey begins in Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its cave-carved dwellings, then heads east to Alberobello, famous for its conical trulli homes. We ‘ll continue to Ostuni, the stunning “White City.” Along the way, enjoy flavorful meals influenced by Italian, Greek, and Middle Eastern traditions and experience the warmth of Southern Italy’s welcoming people. The tour ends in the elegant baroque city of Lecce, known as the “Florence of the South” for its stunning architecture and vibrant atmosphere.

Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Matera is celebrated as the most intact cave-dwelling settlement in the Mediterranean. After settling into our hotel and fitting bikes for a short test ride, we’ll gather for a welcome drink and dinner in the heart of the historic “Sassi.” Spend tonight and tomorrow at Hotel San Domenico (or similar).

Originally destroyed by Hannibal during the Punic Wars, Ostuni was rebuilt by the Greeks—who named it Astu Néon, or “new town”—and later restored by the Normans in the 10th century. It thrived during the Renaissance under Duchess Isabella of Bari. Whether viewed from a distance or explored up close, Ostuni is both striking and full of character. Nearby Cisternino we’ll stop at a local dairy producer where we’ll learn more about and sample the fresh mozzarella, burrata and stracciatella for which Puglia is renowned.
