Portugal’s Alentejo Coast Bike Tour
It’s hard to make a wrong turn when it comes to finding great scenery on the Portuguese Coast! This route takes you through some of the wildest and most beautiful Portuguese landscapes following mostly paved roads with a few easy dirt tracks here and there (about 10%). Witness colorful cliffs guarding secluded white sand beaches against an endless horizon of cerulean waters. Explore a variety of nature parks, castles, fishing villages, cork farms, olive groves, wineries, beaches, hidden coastal coves, and more as you cycle along the Atlantic coastline. Sample local gastronomy – from tasty morning pastries to regional award-winning wines and fresh fish from the sea. Stroll the beaches and cool off with daily swims in the ocean. Transfer from Lisbon to Sesimbra and get oriented on a lovely afternoon ride on the coast.

Your journey begins with a short (45-minute) transfer from Lisbon to Sesimbra, a charming fishing village in Arrábida Natural Park. After a tour introduction and bike fitting we cycle to the impressive Cape Espichel for some stunning cliff views before continuing to the Beach of Meco, a famous Portuguese holiday destination to dip your toes (or more!) in the Atlantic. Have a delicious fresh-fish dinner and spend tonight at Hotel do Mar, a 4-star hotel with a swimming pool – ideal for relaxation after your journey!
Day 02
Visit a fisherman’s market and a coastal castle as you pedal through Arrábida Natural Park on your way to Setúbal.

Today’s activities begin with a visit to Sesimbra’s picturesque fisherman’s market, followed by a climb up to the 12th-century castle that once protected the port. From there, you’ll cycle through the lush greenery of Arrábida Natural Park, taking in its breathtaking views before stopping for a picnic by the sea. Surrounded by mountains on one side and the ocean on the other, the setting will leave you in awe. After a refreshing swim, we continue riding to the vibrant and prosperous city of Setúbal to spend the night at Rio Art Hotel.
Day 03
Ferry to Troia Peninsula. Cycle past sand dunes and the longest white-sand beach in Portugal to Sado Estuary Natural Park.

The day’s bike tour begins with a visit to the vibrant downtown of Setúbal, followed by a ferry ride across the Sado River, home to a thriving dolphin population. After crossing, you’ll cycle through the Troia Peninsula, surrounded by the sand dunes of this former island, before reaching a local wine tasting (included). Next, you’ll ride to the beach for a refreshing swim and another wonderful picnic on Portugal’s longest white sandy beach, stretching for 50 kilometers. After lunch, the scenic route continues through rice fields with wild egrets and storks accompanying you. Those who want more riding can continue pedaling to Santiago do Cacém where we check-in at the Hotel Santiago for the next two nights.
Day 04
Take a rest today or ride to nature reserves on the coast. Pass through cork forests; visit an olive mill and a gin distillery.

Today’s journey starts with a nice downhill cruise through cork forest to reach a family-run olive mill that has been passed down through generations. Take a tour (tasting not included) before we continue cycling through Melides on our way to the coast to visit two distinct ecosystems of freshwater lagoons, both havens for wildlife. The route back up from the coast to Santiago features a challenging climb as well as a visit to a local gin distillery – it’s your call whether to ride or shuttle.
Dinner is on your own today. If you choose to use this as a rest day and skip the ride, lunch will be on your own as well. You can visit the gin farm, castle of Santiago or the Roman ruins of Miróbriga on your own by taxi or bicycle. The hotel also offers a cooking class for dinner (not included).
Day 05
Explore chivalry at the castle and revel in sandy beach coves filled with sapphire seas and guarded by colorful cliffs.

Begin your day with a worthy climb to the castle both for a glimpse into the past and to take in the fantastic views from the ramparts. Day 06
Immerse yourself in Atlantic coastal bliss after a morning of bicycling, beaches, fishing villages, and yes – pirates!

This afternoon provides more time to unwind on the beach or explore the charming village of Vila Nova de Milfontes. Cozy into an enchanting riverside retreat at Monte do Zambujeiro farm at the end of the day, where the tranquil ambiance provides the perfect setting for the last two nights of the tour.

Pinnacle rocks, stork nests, secret grottos, spectacular sea cliffs, and a celebratory sunset dinner cap off an incredible week!
