"Hawaii is not a state of mind, but a state of grace." - Paul Theroux
Experience Hawaii's warmth, color and history - on two wheels! Bicycle dappled banyan-lined roadways, past lush coffee plantations and immense lava fields pummeled by surf. Take a luxury catamaran to a private snorkeling bay. Be awed by the island's astonishing biological diversity. Visit many of its historic and sacred places and discover Kilauea’s secrets in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Hawaii is paradise - perfected on a bicycle.
Due to ongoing volcanic activity at Kilauea, we may alter our itinerary to instead enjoy some of the Big Island's other beautiful districts.
The start of your Big Island bike tour: Meet in Kona. Ride the Kohala Coast and Waimea ranchland. Visit dramatic Waipio Valley. Explore storied Akaka Falls en route to Hilo.
Meet us at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott on the Kohala Coast just north of Kona (public shuttle is available from/to the Kona airport) or at the Kona Seaside if you prefer to stay in town. Ride from Waimea in the heart of Hawaii’s cowboy country down a scenic byway through lush countryside. Stop at an iconic viewpoint overlooking the thousand-food cliffs of the Waipio Valley. Walls swathed in tropical green stand tall, protecting this ancient valley on three sides; the fourth is the sapphire sea. Down the road a bit, hike to see 442-foot-high Akaka Falls. This afternoon, bicycle gentle side roads through banana and papaya plantations, then along the rugged tropical coastline to Hilo. Enjoy your oceanfront views overlooking Hilo Bay.
Bike pristine coastal roads through stands of banyan and eucalyptus. Play in the waters of a natural oceanfront thermal hot spring.
Pedal a blissful network of quiet roads through a region the locals love. Visit spots where some roads disappeared beneath creeping lava just a few years ago. Soak in a series of natural volcanically-heated pools at a park overlooking the crashing surf. Bicycle through eucalyptus and banyan forest and farmland beside the spectacular rocky coastline. Visit an orchid farm. Then it's off to Volcanoes National Park.
Ride down the volcano to Punalu'u. Continue on to South Point, the southern-most point in the United States. From goose to sea turtle to manta ray, there's a lot of wildlife on today's itinerary.
This morning, cruise down the volcano on a fun 25-mile downhill from Kilauea. Keep your eyes peeled for Hawaiian geese - the nene - strutting about. Continue on to Punalu'u black sand beach and watch for honu, the Hawaiian green turtle, sunning on the rocky beach here. Continue on to South Point, the southern-most point in the United States. Hike the windswept bluffs out to the towering seaside cliffs and watch the locals dive into the waters below. Stay in downtown Kona tonight at the Royal Kona.
Ride to the City of Refuge and Kona's coffee country.
Bicycle south through Kona's coffee plantations. Stop for a tasting and tour. Continue past mango, banana and avocado trees down to the ocean. Lunch at the white sands of the City of Refuge, Pu 'uhonua national historic park. Long-ago Hawaiians who had displeased their king fled to this sacred place; many of its ancient ruins remain. This afternoon, ride past a famous painted church and head to the Waikoloa Beach Marriott, the upscale hotel on the Kohala Coast which is home for the next two nights. Enjoy the resort's private white sand beach: snorkel, sunbathe, watch for green sea turtles or join a scuba dive boat. Tennis courts, an infinity pool and a full service spa are also on-site. Two championship golf courses, shopping, and restaurants are next door.
Cruise aboard a luxury catamaran to snorkel a hidden bay. This afternoon: Play a round of golf or tennis, or bicycle part of the Ironman course.
Board a 58-foot luxury sailing catamaran and sail to a great dive and snorkel spot along the coast. Snorkel equipment, instruction, food, and drinks are included in your trip fee. Watch for humpback whales during their January through March migration. Some groups are fortunate enough to spy as many as 40 whales and a dozen breechings — an awesome experience!
Back at the resort, the afternoon is free. Swim, golf (two courses are adjacent to hotel, with equipment available), play tennis, go scuba diving from the hotel’s beach, get a massage at the full service onsite spa. Want to ride? Tackle part of the Hawaii Ironman course, which goes straight past the Waikoloa property. We'll be there for support if you need it.
Ride the island’s north coast. Hike to Pololu Valley. Celebrate with a gourmet picnic lunch at one of the island’s most beautiful white sand beaches.
Head to Hawi on the north end of the island and bicycle to Pololu Valley. Hike down into a remote, roadless valley filled with lush vegetation, high waterfalls, exotic flowers, swaying palm trees and a black sand beach. Ride south beside the coast to finish at the white sands of Hapuna, the best swimming beach on the Big Island. Jump in for some body surfing! Enjoy a festive gourmet picnic, then we'll take you south again to the Waikoloa Beach Marriott, the Kona Seaside or the Kona airport.
As an optional extra, a person traveling solo on any inn-to-inn trip may reserve a room for his or her exclusive use. This will guarantee you a private room and private bath every night. Unlike other tour companies, if you're willing to share a room, there is no extra charge for coming solo, no matter when you sign up for the tour - even if you wind up with a private room by default.
