Norway’s Midnight Sun Bike Tour
So many friends have enjoyed our West Norwegian Fjords tour that we felt compelled to add another destination in this land of unsurpassed natural beauty! Enjoy pedaling on quiet coastal roads with surprisingly few hills as you explore the magnificent coastline between Tromsø and the Lofoten Islands amid the Arctic landscape of northern Norway. Starting from 69° North latitude (just within the Arctic Circle) enjoy stunning views of mountains flanked by fjords, sandy beaches, islands and colorful fishing villages. Summers are short in northern Norway, but it is the perfect season for a bicycle adventure. The mountains are turning green, and local residents spend as much time as possible outside after enduring the long dark winter. Admire the Midnight Sun and the unique nature of the North. Take a whale watching tour from Andenes and, if you like, hike some of the peaks facing the Arctic Ocean. Learn about local traditions like “Allmenningen” (the Commons) and visit a Sami Farm where people herd reindeer as they have for thousands of years. Norwegian cuisine, from the freshest seafoods to world-class wild game, is delicious and combines traditional recipes with modern variations. In short, we encourage you to come join us on the northernmost bicycle tour Bicycle Adventures has to offer!
PEDAL HAPPY: Daily routes on this tour are suitable for all ages and cycling ability levels, including beginners. Additional cycling miles and hiking activities can easily be added for those looking for more, making this a perfect tour for couples, families and groups with diverse interests and cycling experience.

While we await the ferry, you can take a hike to Middagstinden to admire the view of the fjords from above, watch the fishermen, or try some traditional Norwegian food in town. Choose your own adventure in Ardenes this morning. You can cycle out and bike along either coastline of the island (east or west) or do a 52-mile, not too hilly loop around the northern part of the island. Hike uphill to admire views of the Arctic Ocean, walk along the sandy beaches, or relax as you like. Lunch and dinner are on your own today. In the afternoon we gather to take a whale watching tour in a “RIB” boat (rigid inflatable boat). In addition to learning about local wildlife and history, we might have the opportunity to spot some sperm whales, dolphins, killer whales or other mammals that live in the area all year round (included). By night, due to its location, Ardenes is the perfect place to watch the Midnight Sun.
Day 05
Slow-pedal past beautiful beaches to a remote farm lodge for an introduction to the Norwegian concept of “Allmenningen.”
Meals
– Breakfast
– Lunch
– Dinner
Lodging
Marmelkroken Hotel
Distance
29 miles
Elevation
+923 ft / -907 ft. Flat to rolling hills.
It’s an easy ride today, so there’s no need to hurry as we pedal the Andøya Coast Road south from Ardenes to the community of Bø. Budget plenty of time for photos and stops to admire things along the way. This route passes by some of Norway’s most beautiful beaches. Watch for sea eagles patrolling the waters where the land meets the ocean. Marmelkroken Hotel – where we stay – is much more than just another hotel. It is a demonstration of the thousand-year-old Norwegian concept of “Allmenningen” (the Commons) whereby every person should have access to land ranging from the sea to the mountains, providing a complete selection of resources in order to be self-sufficient. Allmenningen here is literally the land owned by the Marmelkroken farm lodge, from the tidal waters, through the fields and marshes, to the mountains.
Day 06
Cycle, meet reindeer, and maybe try a lasso as you observe Nordic traditional life with a local family.
Meals
– Breakfast
– Lunch
– Dinner
Lodging
Scandic Hotel, or Thon Partner Hotel
Distance
39 miles
Elevation
+503 ft / -522 ft. Mostly flat.
We continue south today, cycling mostly along the coast, from Bø to Sortland. En route we will stop at the Inga Sami Farm to meet a family that still lives herding reindeer in the tradition of the Scandinavian native people. Learn about Sami culture, taste some traditional Sami food, meet the reindeer and try out a lasso before we finish the ride into Sortland. You can also enjoy some extra miles if you wish before checking in at our hotel – either Scandic Hotel or the Thon Partner Hotel.
Day 07
Pursue yet more majestic mountain views as you pedal along a fjord, then hike to some viewpoints on a tiny island.

Elevation
+1,277 ft / -1,277 ft. Rolling hills with one climb of 1.7mi/500ft.
Cycle across the southern peninsula of Langøya Island and along a fjord with majestic mountain views across the water. Cross a magnificent bridge to reach our lodging at Vesterålen Kysthotell on tiny Børøya Island. Chances are we will arrive in plenty of time to enjoy one of the many hikes near the hotel before dinner. If the season is right (late June into July) you may be able to track down some delicious cloudberries to sample on the trail or bring some back to put on your dessert!
Day 08
Colorful fishing villages punctuate remote wilderness on the way to the world-renowned Lofoten Islands.
Meals
– Breakfast
– Lunch
Distance
45 miles
Elevation
+957 ft / -959 ft (or more, or less). Mostly flat riding with a few hills.
Cross a bridge to Hadseløya Island and ride around the island to the village of Melbu. From there a 25-minute ferry ride takes us to Austvågøya Island, one of the northernmost of the world-famous Lofoten Islands. The Lofoten Islands are renowned for their combination of serene wilderness and vibrant communities. Picturesque fishing villages with cod fish drying on wooden racks mark the shorelines between steep mountains emerging right out of the Arctic Ocean. We finish the day in Svolvaer, the “big city” of the archipelago (population less than 5000). There is much to see and do in the area should you wish to spend more time here after the tour.
